Symbion Kenya Limited stands as a beacon of architectural and interior design excellence in Kenya and the broader East African region. With a legacy spanning over four decades, the firm has consistently delivered designs that are not only functional but also emotionally resonant and visually captivating.
The origins and evolution of Symbion can be traced to 1980, when two architects, Peter Derek Thomas and Jon Antony Cavanagh formed Symbion, starting as a modest architectural partnership in Nairobi. Over the years, the architectural firm has transformed into one of sub-Saharan Africa’s premier architectural practices, offering a comprehensive suite of services including architecture, interior design, urban planning, and project management.
The firm’s growth has been marked by strategic expansion, leading to the establishment of regional offices in Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, and Mombasa. This regional presence has enabled Symbion to undertake projects across East Africa and beyond, tailoring de-signs to diverse cultural and environmental contexts, specifically suitable to the environmental, cultural and modern architectural philosophies.
Moving forward, at the helm of Symbion Kenya is Managing Director, Arch. Mutua Mutuku, who joined the firm in 2003. An alumnus of the University of Nairobi’s School of Architecture, Mutuku brings a wealth of unique skills and experience, having previously worked in Botswana for five years. Under his leadership and vision, Symbion has continued to prioritize bespoke solutions, ensuring each project meets the unique needs of its clients.
Supporting Mutuku are key figures such as Arch. Oscar Ogunde, who joined Symbion earlier in 1993 and has held various leader-ship roles, including heading both the Ugandan and Kenyan practices. Arch. Titus Kipsang, having been based in Mombasa for over 16 years, brings a deep understanding of coastal architecture and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of architects. Arch. Arthur Oyugi and Arch. Pius Wambua are the other Technical Directors. Lorna Moraa, the Chief Operating Officer and Finance Director completes the board of directors charged with strategy, vision and oversight of Symbion Kenya Limited.
