ANTHONY KAGIRI

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS LEAD, EAST AFRICA AT AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, NAIROBI

Anthony Kagiri, Strategic Communications Lead, East Africa at Aga Khan University and Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, nominations among the Top Marketing and Communications Professionals in Kenya, is a recognition that reflects nearly two decades of influence, innovation, and results-driven storytelling.

Anthony’s journey into communications began more than 20 years ago during his college years, when he started writing newspaper articles. That early exposure to journalism laid the foundation for a career anchored in clarity, credibility, and the power of narrative. Over time, his role evolved from a reporter to a strategic communications leader, navigating the shift from telling stories to shaping institutional reputation and driving business outcomes.

Anthony holds a Master of Arts in Corporate Communications from Daystar University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nairobi. Beyond the credentials, his training and experience has sharpened his appreciation for communications as both a craft and strategy – an outlook that has enabled him to design and execute communications strategies that not only inform and engage, but also support organisational growth and decision-making.

A storyteller at heart, Anthony has built a career spanning education, healthcare, media, humanitarian work, manufacturing, energy, hospitality, and real estate. His professional journey includes roles at Capital FM, St Paul’s University, Janus Continental Group, Bridge International Schools, Dalbit Petroleum, Wines of the World, and now the Aga Khan University. Across these diverse sectors, one principle has remained constant: communications must deliver tangible value. As he often says, “We communicate to influence opinions and stir up positive responses from our audiences that impact brand and business growth.” This philosophy has guided his approach across sectors.

Cross-Sector Expertise and Strategic Insight

Anthony’s professional footprint reflects breadth and depth. Whether working in highly regulated industry, mission-driven institution, or fast-moving commercial environment, he has demonstrated an ability to adapt strategy, tone, and channels to different audiences and objectives.

All the organisations that he has applied his expertise have presented distinct communications challenges, but he has brought strategic clarity, creative direction, and a strong focus on outcomes.

Whether crafting integrated marketing campaigns, shaping internal narratives to align teams around strategy, or managing media relations during critical moments, Anthony has consistently demonstrated that communications is not merely a support function, but a core driver of organisational performance.

This belief is captured in a principle that has become central to his leadership philosophy. As Anthony often notes, “If communications does not demonstrably impact the bottom line, then communications professionals will struggle to earn a seat at the decision-making table.” For him, influence is inseparable from measurable outcomes – whether driving growth, protecting reputation, or strengthening stakeholder trust.

Impact at Aga Khan University & Hospital

Since joining the Aga Khan University network, Anthony has been instrumental in strengthening strategic communications across East Africa – a role that has taken on greater significance as the institution expands its footprint in healthcare, education, and research.

He has led integrated marketing and communications strategies that support sustained business growth, enhance regional visibility, and position the Aga Khan University Hospital as a leading teaching and referral hospital in sub-Saharan Africa. His role later expanded to cover other Aga Khan University entities in East Africa, overseeing communications for academic units, research entities, and health systems across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Equally important to his work is internal communications. Anthony has consistently emphasised that strong brands are built from the inside out – by informed, engaged staff who understand purpose and strategy and own it. He is driving internal engagement initiatives that are strengthening staff ownership, collaboration, and service culture within complex, multi-entity environments.

Anthony has also championed platforms that elevate engagement beyond institutional walls. Notably, he has played a key role in shaping the Life Conversations Forum, a public engagement platform that brings together thought leaders, practitioners, and stakeholders to address pressing societal challenges and co-create solutions. The initiative reflects his belief that communications should spark dialogue, influence thinking, and catalyse action.

Mentorship, People, and Purpose

Beyond seeing brands grow, Anthony derives his greatest professional satisfaction from mentoring people and nurturing the next generation of communications professionals. Throughout his career, he has intentionally created space to onboard interns and young professionals – many of whom have gone on to take up substantive roles within organisations and across the industry.

“For me, mentorship is not an add-on to leadership; it is the essence of it,” Anthony says. “Watching interns and young professionals grow in confidence, skill, and responsibility – and seeing them step into substantive roles – gives me the greatest satisfaction. That’s how you build a profession that lasts.”

This people-first approach has earned him respect not just as a strategist, but as a leader who builds capability and confidence in others.

At the centre of Anthony’s professional and personal life is his family, which he describes as his true north. Family provides him with clarity, purpose, and the motivation to be his best – grounding his work in perspective and values.

“My family keeps me centred,” he reflects. “

Looking Ahead

Away from strategy rooms and campaigns, Anthony values balance and discipline. When not at work, he unwinds in the swimming pool or on a run – activities that mirror the endurance and focus that have defined his professional journey.

As Kenya and the wider African region navigate complex social and economic transitions, Anthony Kagiri’s work stands as a reminder that strategic communications – grounded in purpose, evidence, and results – can shape perceptions, influence decisions, and drive sustainable growth.
