FCPA PHILIP MUEMA
MANAGING PARTNER, ANDERSEN in KENYA
In the world of business, few leaders rise to the level of true visionaries – those who shape industries and leave a lasting societal impact. FCPA Philip Muema, Managing Partner of Andersen in Kenya, is one such leader. From becoming one of the youngest partners at a global Big Four accounting firm to leading Andersen as a rising global contender, his journey reflects excellence, ethics, and determination. Known for his integrity and forward-thinking, Muema has established himself as a force in financial advisory and global business.
At Andersen, Muema combines technical expertise with a progressive approach to leadership. His mission is to equip businesses and individuals with the knowledge to navigate complex tax landscapes. As Managing Partner, he drives the firm’s growth and strategy across Africa and beyond. Under his leadership, Andersen has experienced phenomenal expansion in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), becoming a trusted name in financial advisory services.
Muema’s influence spans sectors such as energy, banking, ICT, agriculture, real estate, and tourism. He is recognised for guiding clients on tax-efficient operations, regulatory compliance, and strategic planning. Notably, he has played a key role in shaping Kenya’s tax policies, collaborating with regulators to ensure businesses thrive while remaining compliant.
One of his recent efforts involves educating the public about new tax developments like the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which replaces the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). Through public discussions, Muema emphasises how leveraging tax reliefs can enhance financial security. He explains, “Tax relief on contributions such as SHIF, NSSF, and retirement savings not only reduces today’s tax burden but strengthens long-term financial resilience. Understanding these benefits rewards foresight and responsibility.”
Muema’s career trajectory is nothing short of inspiring. At just 30, he became one of the youngest partners at KPMG, setting the stage for a career marked by innovation and ethical practices. Recognised as one of Kenya’s ‘Top 40 Under 40 Men’, he has also served as a judge for the same awards, identifying future business leaders. His admission as a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) at 40 further highlights his contributions to the accounting profession, including his role as Convener of the Public Finance Committee.
Muema’s educational credentials from prestigious institutions like Harvard Business School, IESE Business School, Strathmore Business School, and USIU-A have equipped him with strategic and leadership skills vital for modern business.
Beyond his professional achievements, Muema is passionate about mentoring and education. As a lecturer at Strathmore Business School, he inspires future leaders through courses on leadership, strategic decision-making, and ethical business practices. His public speaking and advisory roles emphasise the importance of human-centric leadership in shaping the future of finance and governance.
