Meshack Joram, CEO of the Institute of Directors (IoD) Kenya, embodies these principles through his extensive experience and unwavering commitment to enhancing governance standards.
Joining IoD when it had only 45 members, Meshack took on the role of Administrator, engaging these individuals through networking forums to foster their knowledge and growth in corporate governance. His early experiences alongside the inaugural Board of Directors provided him with invaluable insights into the intricacies of governance and the challenges faced by directors in Kenya. The Centre for Corporate Governance (CCG), led by Karugor Gatamah at the time, played a crucial role in his development, offering training that laid the foundation for his future endeavours. In 2009, after completing a rigorous five-day training course, he qualified as a Corporate Governance Trainer, solidifying his expertise in the field.
In 2014, Meshack was appointed CEO of the Institute, a role in which he has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities. Under his guidance, IoD has both transformed as well as positively influenced the broader corporate landscape in Kenya. His journey, marked by determination and a human-centric leadership style, underscores the significant impact that adept leaders can have on both their institutions and the communities they serve.
Throughout his tenure, Meshack has prioritised the cultivation of strong relationships and effective communication within his team and the wider corporate community. He views leadership as a collaborative venture, emphasising the importance of empathy and professional development. To Meshack, a successful leader listens attentively to their team, understands the challenges they face, and provides the necessary support to foster growth. Beyond his role at IoD, Meshack has made significant contributions to the community. He served as Chair of the HERA Foundation from 2018 to 2021, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to supporting the education of high school students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. His involvement in this initiative underscores his commitment to social responsibility and the belief that education is a powerful tool for transformation. Additionally, as a Board Committee Member of the CITAM Schools Education Committee, he actively participates in shaping educational policies and programs that benefit the youth.
Meshack previously served as Chair of the African Corporate Governance Network (ACGN) from 2018 to 2021, representing Kenya in the Executive Committee. His involvement in this network has allowed him to influence corporate governance practices across Africa, sharing insights and strategies with peers to promote effective governance on the continent. His contributions as a guest speaker at the International Corporate Governance Network Global Virtual Summit further establish him as a thought leader in the field.
Holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Moi University, Meshack has pursued professional qualifications to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to Level II. His commitment to corporate governance is underscored by additional training from prestigious institutions, including the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC). This training encompassed essential areas such as board leadership, developing professional membership institutions, and conducting board evaluations and assessments. Meshack’s ongoing education, including a postgraduate program in corporate governance at KCA University, reflects his dedication to continuous learning and personal growth.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Meshack is an avid sports enthusiast, particularly passionate about football. A dedicated supporter of Manchester United, he also closely follows local teams in rugby and athletics. His love for the outdoors is evident in his hiking adventures, having explored notable locations such as Mt. Longonot and Mt. Kenya. These hobbies provide him with a balanced perspective, fostering resilience and enhancing his ability to lead effectively. Additionally, his enjoyment of motivational books and biographies reflects his commitment to personal development and continuous self-improvement.
Happily married and a father of three, Meshack’s family life enriches his leadership journey. He actively engages in various roles within his local church, embodying his belief in community service and mentorship.
