SYMBION KENYA LIMITED
Symbion Kenya Limited stands as a beacon of architectural and interior design excellence in Kenya and the broader East African region. With a legacy spanning over four decades, the firm has consistently delivered designs that are not only functional but also emotionally resonant and visually captivating.
The origins and evolution of Symbion can be traced to 1980, when two architects, Peter Derek Thomas and Jon Antony Cavanagh formed Symbion, starting as a modest architectural partnership in Nairobi. Over the years, the architectural firm has transformed into one of sub-Saharan Africa’s premier architectural practices, offering a comprehensive suite of services including architecture, interior design, urban planning, and project management.
The firm’s growth has been marked by strategic expansion, leading to the establishment of regional offices in Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, and Mombasa. This regional presence has enabled Symbion to undertake projects across East Africa and beyond, tailoring de-signs to diverse cultural and environmental contexts, specifically suitable to the environmental, cultural and modern architectural philosophies.

Moving forward, at the helm of Symbion Kenya is Managing Director, Arch. Mutua Mutuku, who joined the firm in 2003. An alumnus of the University of Nairobi’s School of Architecture, Mutuku brings a wealth of unique skills and experience, having previously worked in Botswana for five years. Under his leadership and vision, Symbion has continued to prioritize bespoke solutions, ensuring each project meets the unique needs of its clients.
Supporting Mutuku are key figures such as Arch. Oscar Ogunde, who joined Symbion earlier in 1993 and has held various leader-ship roles, including heading both the Ugandan and Kenyan practices. Arch. Titus Kipsang, having been based in Mombasa for over 16 years, brings a deep understanding of coastal architecture and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of architects. Arch. Arthur Oyugi and Arch. Pius Wambua are the other Technical Directors. Lorna Moraa, the Chief Operating Officer and Finance Director completes the board of directors charged with strategy, vision and oversight of Symbion Kenya Limited.

Symbion’s portfolio is replete with iconic signature projects that have redefined skylines and set new standards in design. Notable examples include:
- Villa Rosa Kempinski, Nairobi: A luxurious five-star hotel known for its distinctive dusky pink façade and opulent interiors.
- Kampala Serena Hotel: A transformation of the former Nile Hotel into a sophisticated resort that draws inspiration from Uganda’s cultural and natural heritage.

These projects, among others, exemplify Symbion’s ability to create spaces that are not only functional but also emotionally engaging and contextually relevant.
Symbion’s architectural design philosophy centres on delivering be-spoke solutions that resonate with clients’ visions while respecting the cultural and environmental contexts of each project. The firm leverages cutting-edge technology, including ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, Autodesk Re-vit, SketchUp, and 3D Max, to bring designs to life with precision and creativity.

A commitment to sustainability is evident in projects like the Standard Chartered Bank Headquarters in Nairobi, recognized as a green building. Symbion integrates eco-friendly features into its de-signs, acknowledging the environ-mental impact of construction and striving to minimize it.
Symbion’s excellence has been acknowledged through numerous awards and recognitions, including:
- Gold Awards: For projects like the UAP Headquarters in Nairobi and the Serengeti Serena Lodge in Tanzania.
- Silver and Bronze Awards: Recognizing achievements in interior design and tourism-related projects across East Africa.

These accolades underscore the firm’s commitment to quality, innovation, and client satisfaction.
Beyond architecture, Symbion is deeply invested in community engagement, legacy and development. The firm participates in initiatives like the Beyond Zero campaign, supports the Mama Sarah Obama Foundation, Standard Chartered Marathons, and undertakes water projects in semi-arid regions.
Symbion also prioritizes nurturing local talent, offering training programs for young architects to ensure the continuity of its design legacy.
Symbion’s projects are not merely structures but masterpieces that evoke emotion and reflect the rich tapestry of East African culture and heritage. As the firm continues to soar into the sky and reshape skylines and communities, Symbion remains a testament to the trans-formative power of art, culture and modernity in architecture.
