BEATRICE KIRURI
PEOPLE & CULTURE MANAGER BAMBURI CEMENT PLC
I began my educational journey in a local primary school in Nairobi, where I discovered my love for people, learning, and storytelling. I was actively involved in drama and debate clubs, where my communication skills and confidence in engaging with diverse audiences began to take root—skills that have become central to my work in Human Resources today.
I continued my studies at a reputable high school in Meru County. Here, I served as a prefect—an experience that shaped my leadership values around discipline, fairness, and collaboration. My exposure to school governance and student welfare made me increasingly aware of the social systems that influence individual performance—an early insight into the kind of people-centered cultures I would later champion professionally as an Employee Engagement Champion.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from Daystar University, a foundation that enriched my interpersonal and corporate communication skills. I then received a prestigious scholarship to pursue an MBA at Bologna Business School—one of Europe’s top institutions. Later, I earned a second scholarship for a Master’s degree in International Human Resource Management from Rome Business School.

The Bologna Business School scholarship came with a condition that has since defined my career purpose: to return to Kenya and make a positive impact in my community. That commitment laid the foundation for my active role in advancing inclusive, engaged, and high-performing workplaces. While in Europe, I interned at organizations that exposed me to people-centric HR practices—where performance, engagement, and inclusion were fully aligned.
My HR journey began in Learning and Development, a role I held for seven years. In 2018, I received a Holcim Gold Star recognition for best training facilitator for sub-Saharan Africa, a recognition that validated my commitment to empowering employees through designing impactful experiential and engaging learning programs.
Today, I am a Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP-K) and speak frequently on topics around inclusive leadership, culture design, and workforce engagement.
In 2023, our collective efforts at Bamburi Cement led to the company being recognized as the “Second Most Inclusive Listed Company” at the National Diversity & Inclusion Awards & Recognition (DIAR) in Kenya. In 2024, I received two individual honours. I won the C-suite Executive Award at DIAR, hosted by Diama Trust. Additionally, I was a finalist for the Inclusive Leader Award at the Africa and Middle East Gender Mainstreaming Awards, recognizing my leadership in driving inclusive workplace practices.
I have also been part of transformative initiatives such as:
- Women on Wheels (WOW): A pioneering program in Kenya, launched by Bamburi Cement in partnership with Isuzu East Africa and other industry stakeholders, that equips women with the skills and training needed to become professional drivers in the transport sector – addressing gender gaps, promoting inclusivity and empowering women to thrive in historically underrepresented roles.
- Sourcing2Equal: A collaborative program between Bamburi Cement and the IFC that promotes supplier diversity by improving access to procurement opportunities for women-led businesses—driving inclusive economic empowerment across the value chain.
I am an avid gardener and passionate public speaker. Both practices ground me—gardening in its quiet discipline, and speaking in its power to connect people to purpose and spark fresh new ideas.
Several books have influenced my personal and professional philosophy. For example:
- Dare to Lead by Brené Brown—on courageous leadership
- The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle—for insights into how teams build trust and performance
- Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg—about empowering women in leadership
These titles shaped my approach to people development, inclusion, and building engaged psychologically safe workplaces.
I mentor young professionals—especially women and underrepresented youth—on leadership, career growth, and personal branding.
Three life practices guide my approach when dealing with people and culture:
- Inclusion Empowers Growth: I believe diverse teams outperform and innovate more.
- Lift as You Climb: Every achievement is an opportunity to bring others along—the principle guiding my mentorship and coaching.
- Courage and Adaptability: In an ever‑changing world, the ability to challenge the status quo while remaining agile is key to effective leadership.
I speak and moderate in panels at international and national events, most recent among them being at the “Future of DEIB” panel at the Zamara Kenya Regional HR Summit, where I facilitated discussions with peers to map inclusive talent strategies for the future of work and at the recently concluded 2025 Annual HR Summit hosted by Strathmore Business School (SBS). In the latter, I had the honour of participating in a panel discussion on “The Learning Organization: Embracing Lifelong Learning for Organizational Competitiveness.” Our conversation focused on the evolving organizational design and learning culture required to effectively integrate AI and machine learning into the workplace.
