ECOBANK
Forty years ago, a bold idea took root; the establishment of a bank for Africa, by Africans. Conceived in Mali in 1972, nurtured through determination and ultimately realised in 1985 when Ecobank opened its doors in Lome, Togo (its current headquarters), this vision has grown into one of Africa’s greatest success stories.
Ecobank was established with a vision to build a world-class African bank that drives the continent’s economic development and financial integration.
What began as a single-country bank is today Africa’s most geographically diverse banking group, operating in 32 African countries, including Kenya, and serving more than 35 million customers. Ecobank has employed over 14,000 staff from 43 nationalities, reflecting the diverse continent it was built to serve.

From pioneering longer banking hours and opening on weekends, radical at the time, to navigating political upheavals, civil conflicts, and now advancing Africa’s digital banking revolution, Ecobank has consistently been at the forefront of transformation and become synonymous with banking in Africa.
“Our founders would indeed be proud. Forty years of resilience. Forty years of innovation. Forty years of growth,” said Ms. Josephine Anan-Ankomah, Ecobank Regional Executive, Central, Eastern and Southern Africa (CESA) during the Ecobank at 40 celebrations in Nairobi in October 2025. “Ecobank’s transformation is proof that the dream of our founders not only endured, it thrived.” she added.

Technology and pan-African expertise are central to Ecobank’s strategy, enhancing customer value and delivering an exceptional seamless banking experience across all touchpoints. Its focus on innovation and integration positions it as a key enabler of intra-African trade.
Within the Group structure, Ecobank Kenya represents the bank’s strategic footprint in East Africa. Headquartered in Nairobi, the subsidiary was established in 2008 following the acquisition of the East African Building Society (EABS). This entry was significant, positioning the bank within one of Africa’s leading financial hubs.
Since its inception, Ecobank Kenya has demonstrated steady growth, serving customers through 16 branches, 20 ATMs, robust digital platforms and a growing network of Xpress Point agents.
Ecobank Kenya plays a critical role in facilitating tailored financial solutions for individuals, businesses and large corporations looking to expand into the regional and international trade scene. By connecting local businesses to the Group’s pan-African network, the bank enables seamless movement of capital, goods, and services, particularly benefiting SMEs seeking to expand and scale beyond the domestic market.
In March 2025, the bank reinforced its capacity by boosting its capital base by KSh 3.5 billion, bringing the total to KSh 9 billion as at December 2025. This infusion of capital has strengthened its ability to support SMEs, FinTechs, and regional commerce. The following form the core tenets of Ecobank’s strategic play in Kenya:
SME Banking
Ecobank Kenya supports SMEs with flexible financing, risk-sharing partnerships, and tailored programmes like Ellevate, which enable women-led businesses to access capital, build capacity, upskill and access networking opportunities and grow sustainably beyond Kenya. The program has since its inception in Kenya supported over 2,000 women entrepreneurs and extended capacity building to 5,000 women through its training program, which provides women entrepreneurs with the skills needed to build and sustain their businesses.
In addition, the Ellevate programme offers loans of up to KSh 6.5 million collateral free for registered business, extended repayment terms and risk guarantee arrangements covering a minimum of 75% through its risk-sharing partnership with African Guarantee Fund (AGF). Across the Group, Ellevate has provided capital to women reaching USD 780 million.

Regional Trade Solutions
As trade expands in the country and region, the need for financial solutions that match its pace is rising. Businesses require affordable transfers, currency conversions, trade finance tools, digital payments, and practical support to navigate differing regulations. Ecobank’s presence and digital integration strategy help meet these needs for Kenyan businesses efficiently.
This is further supported through the Ecobank Single Market Hub, a digital marketplace connecting buyers and sellers. Integrated with Ecobank’s trade finance suite and supported by risk-sharing arrangements such as those with the African Guarantee Fund, Ecobank Kenya provides guarantees, letters of credit, and import and export financing that help de-risk and accelerate cross-border business.
By investing in digital interoperability linking mobile money and banking systems across the continent, Ecobank ensures traders can reach more markets, move funds securely, and strengthen regional value chains. As East Africa moves toward deeper economic integration, Ecobank continues to be a key enabler, powering payments, and helping businesses scale across the region.
Pan-African Payments
Leveraging Kenya’s digital leadership, Ecobank Kenya has integrated with M-PESA and other payment platforms to deliver inclusive, convenient banking services that reach every corner of the country.
Additionally, Rapidtransfer, the bank’s money transfer service, offers a real-time, secure channel for cross-border remittances. Combined with digital platforms like Ecobank Mobile and internet banking, these tools enhance financial inclusion and reduce dependence on physical branches, making it easier to transfer money across borders for Kenyans in the country and those living in the diaspora.

Ecobank Kenya leverages its continental network to deliver value locally. Through its focus and expertise on trade facilitation, SME growth, and women’s economic empowerment, the subsidiary continues to shape Kenya’s financial landscape while advancing the broader vision of a connected and prosperous Africa.
Social Investment Initiatives
Ecobank Kenya’s community engagements over the years have demonstrated its belief in the transformative power of education and the value of community support. In 2025, the Bank extended its three-year partnership with the Heritage of Faith and Hope Children Centre and School in Sabaki, Athi River, supporting the construction of science and computer laboratories at the institution. Beyond infrastructure, Ecobank Kenya has provided full secondary school scholarships, learning materials, food supplies, and sanitary items to support the school’s operations.
Looking into the future of Ecobank in Kenya, the appointment of Rebecca Mbithi as the CEO marks the beginning of a strategic growth agenda for Ecobank in Kenya. Ms Mbithi is a highly experienced and results driven leader with a proven record of leadership in the banking industry.
