RITA KAVASHEMD ISUZU EAST AFRICA

Rita Kavashe is the Chair and Managing Director of Isuzu East Africa. With over thirty years of experience in the motor industry, spread across the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, she made history in 2011, upon appointment as the first Kenyan Managing Director of then General Motors EA. This appointment would thrash upon her the responsibility of re-structuring and transforming General Motors East Africa into Isuzu East Africa in 2017.

Under her watch, Isuzu East Africa is now East Africa leading commercial vehicle assembler with solid regional presence and market leadership.

Rita joined the motor industry in 1995 in the sales and marketing department of then General Motors EA. She has worked her way through the ranks both in Kenya and South Africa, excelling in all the positions she has held. In recognition of her business acumen, General Motors nominated her for a leadership sponsored programs at Harvard Business School to further sharpen her skills.

The exit of General Motors East Africa six years after Rita took the helm, was one of the biggest career challenges. Sometimes demoralizing and sometimes de-stabilizing, Rita re-engineered the company structure and management, including the cultural and strategic change and alignment with Japan, enabling Isuzu regain and retain its market leadership and lead in all commercial vehicles segments it is present.

Rita’s pedigree as CEO has been put to the test several times. Like fish in fresh water, Rita has navigated diverse business and policy regimes, different consumer market behaviour and road conditions in the three countries she’s in charge of: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. To her, borderless leadership is not an idea; it is her practice and management style, modifying financial paradigms and modelling: Through her hands, from the same market and finance team, a Kenyan school is able to purchase a bus, that Tanzanian rural logistics operators can find leasing options and that Ugandan distributors remain afloat: A single corporation, three nations, millions of impediments, seamlessly run efficiently and effectively under her belt.

Under Rita, Isuzu East Africa has achieved numerous milestones. In May 2023, the company was rated by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) top with the Energy Management Awards (EMA). In the same month, Isuzu East Africa attracted attention one more time, when the Eliud Kipchoge 1:59 Limited -Edition Isuzu D-max was launched. The double cab pick-up is not just a truck but a brand represented by the Kenyan legendary athlete and his historical sub-two-hour marathon victory in 2019.

Another proud moment came in July 2023, when President William Ruto commissioned an electro-deposition paint plant with a value of KSh 1billion. It is the pioneer of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, outside Egypt and South Africa. This was quickly followed in October of 2023: Isuzu East Africa won the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) Employer of the Year award, important recognition of workplace culture under Rita’s transformational leadership.

The 2023 wave would carry through to 2024, with Isuzu East Africa being the first subsidiary outside Japan to import, assemble, distribute and fully service UD Trucks. In August 2025, Rita presided over the ground breaking of a KSh3 billion Parts Distribution Center (PDC). Then came 3rd September 2025, Isuzu East Africa commemorated its Golden Jubilee in style, marking the 50th year of offering transport solutions that have become the hallmark of the East Africa region.

Outside Isuzu EA, Rita is chair of board of BAT Kenya PLC and a non-executive director on the board of Safaricom PLC. She previously headed the Kenya Roads Board and was a Member of the Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Board. She has sat on a number of boards including: Bamburi Cement Plc, the Automobile Association of Kenya, the East African Business Council (EABC), the Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers Association (KVMA) and the Kenya Motor Industry Association (KMIA). She is a current member on the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) advisory board. Socially, she’s a board member of the Palmhouse Foundation and board of Trustees of the University of Eldoret Endowment Trust.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education (B. Edu) from Moi University, a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Nairobi. Rita is also an executive coach certified by the Academy of Executive Coaches (AoEC) in the United Kingdom.

In 2017, the President of Kenya bestowed on Rita the honour of the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS), for services rendered to the people of Kenya, one of the most prestigious civilian national awards in Kenya.

The approach to leadership adopted by Rita Kavashe is not grounded on swapping playbooks or neater foreign models. Its origin lies, rather, in practical action, in providing a rural school with its first bus, in bringing the informal matatu operators into the formal sector, in persuading Tokyo to cede the decision-making capabilities at Isuzu East Africa to Africa.

Rita does not need a spotlight to demonstrate her influence, as her foot prints are clearly etched on the floor of factories, logistics centers, and highways throughout East Africa, where the Isuzu commercial vehicle brand is legendary.
