RISPER GENGA OHAGA

GROUP CFOEABL

As one of the most successful businessmen, Warren Buffet, declares, “A good CFO does more than balance the books; they shape the future.” Risper Genga Ohaga, a powerhouse in finance whose career is as dynamic as the industries she has helped shape, seamlessly embodies this philosophy.

As Group CFO of East African Breweries PLC (EABL), Risper is not just a number cruncher; she is a visionary leader, a mentor, and a champion of transformational leadership. Growing up surrounded by six siblings, she quickly learned the art of strategic thinking, adaptability, and collaboration – skills that have defined her career. “When you grow up in a big family, you learn early that success is more about listening, strategising, and finding ways to move forward together, than being the loudest in the room,” she says.

Risper’s journey into finance began with a strong academic foundation. A scholarship at Strathmore University to study to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) was her first step into the world of finance, setting the stage for an exceptional career. Simultaneously, she pursued a degree in Commerce (Accounting) at the University of Nairobi (UoN), where she built her technical expertise. Even in her early years, Risper displayed a rare blend of analytical acumen and leadership, excelling not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities that sharpened her problem-solving skills. “Numbers tell a story, but understanding the bigger picture – that is where the magic happens,” she reflects on the lessons that shaped her approach.

Risper launched her career at KPMG Kenya, where she spent nine years refining her expertise in audit, consultancy, and risk management. Her work primarily focused on financial services and development sectors, exposing her to diverse industries and leadership styles. For Risper, more than just her first job, KPMG was a rigorous training ground that honed her skills in stakeholder management, business strategy, and risk assessment. “Auditing gives you a front-row seat to how businesses succeed, or fail. You learn to ask the right questions, challenge assumptions, and always look at the bigger picture,” she says.

Risper then transitioned into the banking sector, joining Barclays Bank as the Regional Director for Internal Audit for East and West Africa. Her ability to adapt quickly saw her rise to become the Managing Director for Internal Audit in South Africa, before shifting into a more commercial role as the Finance Director at Barclays Bank Zambia. There, she and her team navigated a volatile economic climate while successfully implementing a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Through collective effort and strategic financial management, the Zambian business not only withstood macroeconomic instability but also achieved strong financial results and sustainable growth. “Resilience in finance is about anticipating challenges and ensuring the business is always one step ahead,” she reflects.

Her leadership qualities and financial expertise eventually led her to EABL, where she was appointed Group CFO. At EABL, Risper plays a pivotal role in shaping financial strategy, driving operational efficiencies, and ensuring sustainable business growth. She has been instrumental in navigating complex market dynamics, optimising capital allocation, and helping steer the company through an evolving regulatory and economic landscape.

A defining feature of Risper’s leadership is her inclusive, people-first approach. She firmly believes in creating an environment where employees feel valued and empowered. Her ability to spot, attract, and nurture top talent has led to the development of high-performing teams that thrive long after she moves on to new challenges.

Outside of her executive roles, Risper extends her expertise to the boards of APA and I&M as a member. A certified coach and a dedicated global mentor for the Global Women on Boards Network (WOBN), she actively guides women aspiring to secure board positions worldwide. She also lends her time to Executive Connect, a leadership forum committed to enhancing the quality of leadership within organisations. Her influence and commitment to leadership development continue to shape the next generation of corporate trailblazers.

Risper is a staunch advocate for diversity and inclusion. She has worked across multiple cultures and believes that organisations thrive when they create spaces where different voices, backgrounds, and perspectives are embraced. Her mentorship initiatives, particularly for young women in finance, have equipped many with the skills and confidence to step into leadership positions. “The future of leadership is diverse, and the sooner we embrace that, the stronger our businesses will be,” she asserts.

Passionate about sustainability and ethical leadership, Risper believes that organisations must balance profit with purpose. She advocates for businesses to integrate social responsibility into their corporate DNA, ensuring that their operations positively impact communities. “The best companies don’t just make money – they make a difference,” she says, a principle she carries into every strategic decision she makes.

As she continues to make her mark in the finance industry, Risper’s influence is undeniable. With a sharp mind, a strategic approach, and an unshakable commitment to leadership excellence, she is redefining what it means to be a modern CFO.
