CAROLINE SIMBA

CHIEF ENTERPRISE BUSINESS OFFICER – JAMII TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Caroline Simba’s life and career have been a remarkable testament to resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. At just 12 years old, she knew she wanted to become a lawyer. By 1996, her dream began to take shape when she secured a place at a prestigious London university to study law. Over the next eight years, Caroline would earn two advanced degrees – one in law and another in strategic human resources – while completing a legal practice course, the key postgraduate qualification for becoming a practising solicitor in England. This period of rigorous academic pursuit laid the foundation for her future successes.

After completing her studies, Caroline honed her skills at several law firms, sharpening her analytical and problem-solving abilities. Her experience would ultimately pave the way for her return to Kenya in 2004, where she joined the renowned law firm Kaplan & Stratton Advocates as a trainee. Her time at the firm proved invaluable, with Caroline rapidly rising to the position of associate in the commercial department. There, she worked on high-profile transactions, including the privatisation of Telkom Kenya, the expansive Vipingo Ridge development, and the acquisition of Homegrown by James Finlay in 2007. Surrounded by some of Kenya’s sharpest legal minds, Caroline observed firsthand the relentless work ethic and dedication to the law that she would later incorporate into her own career. Her exceptional work was recognised in 2010 when she was named one of the Top 40 Under 40 Women in Kenya.

Caroline’s career has not been without personal trials. In 2005, cancer claimed the life of her mother, who had been the rock of their family. In the face of this devastating loss, Caroline was thrust into a leadership role within her family. In her own words, “Being thrust into a profound personal crisis forces you to transform – you must summon the courage to face the setbacks and navigate the turbulence around you with resoluteness.” This experience, while painful, helped shape the leader she would become. With time, Caroline took immense pride in seeing two of her siblings graduate from university.

In 2009, Caroline made a significant shift in her career when she ventured into in-house legal practice, joining a local telecommunications company at the height of Kenya’s booming industry. She set up the legal department from scratch, creating systems and processes to support the growing business. In 2017, when the company acquired a mobile license, Caroline pivoted to a new realm – policy and regulation. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in her career, where she honed a different set of skills: collaboration, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement.

Caroline’s passion for public service and industry development led her to chair and/or serve on numerous technical committees, where she contributed to the country’s National Digital Masterplan and various laws and regulations. Her expertise additionally took her to international fora like the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU), where global policies are shaped.

Caroline’s commitment to advancing both legal and industry policy led to two nominations in 2022 for Law Society of Kenya’s (LSK) Nairobi’s Lawyer of the Year and In-House Practitioner of the Year. In 2023, Caroline was awarded the prestigious title of In-House Lawyer of the Year, Africa, in Addis Ababa.

Throughout her journey, Caroline has maintained a relentless focus on personal development, driven by her belief in embracing challenges. She reflects, “Growing up, I was acutely aware of the inevitable hardships that lay ahead of me and I knew that no one was coming to save us.” This realisation, deeply ingrained in her from a young age, spurred her to live a life of hard work, focus, and conscientiousness. She notes, “It is in tough times when I best thrive – when the stakes are high, I have learned to instinctively steer the course to survival with little emotion or melodrama.”

Caroline’s fortitude and adaptability were further tested when she decided to pursue strategy and leadership studies at Harvard Business School. What began as an academic endeavor took a sharp turn when she transitioned into a commercial role within her company. This new position gave her a fresh perspective on the business, where the stakes were high, and the focus was on revenue growth. “You must be notoriously customer-obsessed and consistently deliver high-quality innovative services,” she remarks, adding that every day presented a new challenge in the pursuit of excellence. Caroline’s entrepreneurial mindset and deep sense of ethics guided her in navigating this new world. “Each day, I ask myself, how can I serve? It is very important to me that I maintain an entrepreneurial mindset, always hungry for business and engage ethically and with integrity.”

Outside her professional life, Caroline values moments of solitude, especially silent retreats, which she guards zealously. She also embraces fitness, particularly bodybuilding, which she believes is integral to maintaining mental and physical discipline. She comments, “The discipline and mental toughness needed to sustain a fitness regimen tests the ability of any leader to remain consistent and calm during high-pressured moments.” She sees it as an investment in her overall well-being, enabling her to perform at her optimal level as a leader.

For Caroline, family remains a source of grounding and joy. “I have a large family, and the chaos and laughter they bring remind me of my blessings,” she shares, underscoring the importance of balance in her life. Despite her numerous achievements, it is clear that Caroline’s journey is far from over. Her story is one of continuous growth, unwavering resilience, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact wherever she goes.
