DR JOSHUA OIGARA REGIONAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE EAST AFRICA, STANBIC BANK

For Oigara, East Africa’s next frontier is competitiveness, not survival. He believes the region’s growth story must be anchored in human capital, sustainable finance and regional integration. “The next decade will test our creativity as much as our courage,” he reflects. “But those who transform readiness into advantage will define Africa’s future.”

As Regional Chief Executive for East Africa at Standard Bank Group – the largest bank in Africa by assets, and Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Kenya and South Sudan, Oigara is translating that conviction into measurable impact. His leadership reflects a simple truth: Africa’s growth must be financed from within and designed for the long term.
Under Oigara’s leadership, Stanbic has emerged as a key player in shaping the region’s economic architecture, financing 202 million dollars in cross-border infrastructure, leading East Africa’s largest Sustainability Linked Loan and expanding access to finance for more than ten million SMEs. The bank aims to triple its SME market share to nine percent by 2028, anchored in digital innovation and strong regional partnerships.

A Pan-Africanist at heart, Dr Joshua Oigara believes Africa’s transformation must begin from within, through investment in people, innovation and collaboration. He sees the continent’s potential not as theory but as a reality unfolding in its renewable energy endowments, creative industries and youthful workforce. Yet he is pragmatic. Growth must be matched by sustained investment in education, innovation and infrastructure, a principle reflected in Stanbic’s work across the region, from financing green energy to supporting women-led enterprises and regional trade.

Stanbic now dominates the corporate and investment banking space with a 25 percent share across East Africa while steadily growing its retail and SME presence, currently at about seven percent. Its industry-low non-performing loan ratio of 9.5 percent, compared to a regional average of 17.6 percent, underscores prudent risk management and a deep understanding of local markets.

With strong capital buffers and a balanced portfolio spanning large corporates, SMEs and personal banking, Stanbic is building for the long term, financing the region’s ambitions with African capital.
To Dr. Oigara, technology has become Africa’s greatest equaliser, a bridge rather than a disruptor. Through data powered lending and digital ecosystems that enable borderless banking under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Stanbic is redefining what financial access means for small traders, farmers and innovators. Digital tools now move money and ideas seamlessly across borders, transforming how communities trade, learn and grow. “Innovation must broaden participation,” Oigara explains. “When technology meets trust, opportunity multiplies.”

Stanbic’s strategy speaks to that conviction. The bank has earmarked a USD 100 million catalytic fund to spur investment in high-growth sectors such as manufacturing, agribusiness, healthcare and the creative economy. Further, it continues to play a leading role in financing energy transition projects and sustainable infrastructure across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania Areas that will define Africa’s next growth decade. Stanbic has combined disciplined growth, a diversified portfolio and a renewed focus on inclusion to ensure that East Africa’s progress is both measurable and meaningful.
Playing a significant role in digital transformation and regional finance, Dr Oigara has been recognised among Africa’s leading economic voices. His leadership has earned him the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), a national honour conferred by the Government of Kenya, and an Honorary Doctorate from Kibabii University for advancing sustainable finance and inclusive growth. He continues to champion stability, innovation and sustainable finance, while advancing regional growth.
As global economies shift and supply chains realign, Oigara remains guided by a clear philosophy of people, purpose and partnership. He sees East Africa as a platform for Africa’s global influence; a region ready to lead in trade, innovation and sustainable growth.
“The question is no longer whether East Africa is resilient,” he says. “It is whether we can turn that resilience into world-class competitiveness.”

Under his leadership, Stanbic Bank is demonstrating that Africa’s transformation is not an aspiration, but a discipline built on confidence, collaboration and capital that flows from within.

Dr Joshua Oigara joined the Standard Bank Group in 2022, building on his experience as Group Chief Executive Officer of KCB, one of Africa’s leading financial institutions. He was conferred with the First Class Honours of the Order of the Chief of the Burning Spear (CBS) by President Uhuru Kenyatta for exemplary service to his country, Kenya.

Dr. Joshua Oigara stands tall among the new generation of Kenyan CEOs shaping sub-Saharan Africa’s economic future.
