KARIUKI NGARI

MD & CEOSTANDARD CHARTERED KENYA

In a fast-changing financial services industry where global standards meet local realities, Kariuki Ngari has emerged as one of the most inclusive and visionary leaders in Africa. As Managing Director and CEO of Standard Chartered Kenya, he stands at the intersection of legacy, innovation, and the future of banking in sub-Saharan Africa. His leadership extends beyond Kenya, overseeing operations across West, East, and Southern Africa, where Standard Chartered is driving forward-looking initiatives in financial inclusion, sustainability, and digital transformation.

According to Kariuki, “Africa is the future of global banking — a relatively young population, diverse, fast-growing, tech-savvy, and deeply entrepreneurial. Standard Chartered’s role is to unlock that potential in a responsible and scalable way across the continent.”

Standard Chartered is one of the oldest banks in Kenya, with a legacy spanning over one hundred years. Under Kariuki’s leadership, the Bank has undergone a strategic transformation, becoming leaner, faster, more digital, and more socially impactful, while preserving strong governance practices and deep client relationships.

Kariuki was appointed CEO in 2019, bringing more than two decades of global experience, having held senior roles across the Singapore and several African business units. His return to Standard Chartered from then Barclays Bank reflects a compelling homegrown leadership story, blending a global mindset with a strong local African focus. Under his tenure, Standard Chartered has:

  • strengthened its regional Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) franchise
  • pioneered sustainable finance investments across Africa
  • invested heavily in digital banking platforms for both Affluent and Corporate and Investment Banking clients
  • maintained strong profitability and capital resilience amid economic turbulence.

A cornerstone of Kariuki’s leadership has been digital transformation with measurable impact. Over 90 percent of transactions are done digitally across Wealth and Retail Banking and Corporate and Investment Banking. Standard Chartered was among the first banks in Kenya to launch a fully digital retail banking platform offering more than 75 services without requiring physical branch visits. The Bank’s SC Mobile and Online Banking platforms have been optimised to support seamless client journeys, from product acquisition, savings to investments and transactions. Corporate clients benefit from digital solutions such as Straight2Bank, which streamlines collections, payments, and trade finance, improving efficiency across cross-border trade networks.

Additionally, Standard Chartered supports large corporations, development organisations, governments, banks and investors to access cross-border trade and investment opportunities across its global network. Through innovation and digitisation, Corporate and Investment banking clients can utilise the award-winning platform, Straight2Bank for collections, payments, tax, payroll, trade finance, custody, and foreign exchange (FX) services with convenience and safety.

Beyond commercial growth, Kariuki has been at the forefront of Standard Chartered’s sustainability and community impact agenda. He has championed initiatives aligned with global Environmental, Social, And Governance (ESG) standards, including mobilising capital for a greener and more inclusive economy. Key milestones include:

  • The launch of green and sustainability-linked loans for renewable energy such as the KES 30 billion sustainability linked-loan with Safaricom PLC
  • Financing green energy infrastructure across Africa
  • Support for women-led MSMEs, through Women in Tech (WiT) and Access to Finance programmes. Through Women in Tech, 92 female led businesses have gone through a 12-week training programme with 46 enterprises being awarded KES 1.3 million each in seed money for their ventures.
  • Integrating climate risk into credit and lending frameworks
  • Leading a three-year partnership with the Nairobi Arboretum that resulted in the planting of over one million seedlings. This demonstrates Kariuki’s commitment to community impact that resulted in an award from the Global CEO

Through flagship programmes in employment and entrepreneurship, the Bank has deepened its role as a trusted partner in the communities it serves. In the flagship Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, the participants have increased by 78% and money raised for Futuremakers has grown by 76% to a record KES 76 million.

Kariuki also serves on several policy and advisory forums focused on climate finance, blended capital, and SME development. “We believe in being more than a bank — we are a platform for opportunity and sustainability, now central to both our risk management and growth strategy,” he notes.

His leadership philosophy emphasizes diversity, inclusion, and values-based decision-making. Under his guidance, women now hold over 36 percent of leadership positions and represent 54 percent of the workforce in the Kenyan business. Employee volunteering, mentorship, and community engagement have become integral to the employee experience at Standard Chartered.

Outside the Bank, Kariuki, is a mentor, speaker, and advocate for African talent development, financial literacy, corporate governance and ethical leadership. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (HONS) in Economics and Sociology from University of Nairobi. He is an avid learner and had participated actively in various professional courses including Senior Management Courses in GIBBS Business School – South Africa, SAID Business School, London Oxford, INSEAD Business School Singapore. In a nutshell, Kariuki walks the talk and is one of the best CEOs in the sub-Saharan banking landscape.
