Carolyne Kendi is one of Kenya’s most accomplished brand storytellers and commercial marketing leaders, with over two decades of experience shaping brands, businesses, and marketing capability across FMCG, beverage, telecommunications, banking, and financial services sectors. Her career reflects a rare blend of corporate leadership, continental exposure, and a deep commitment to building brands that drive both cultural relevance and commercial growth.

She is the Founder and CEO of CK Marketing Coaching Ltd, a brand and marketing advisory and coaching firm she has led since 2024. Since its inception, CK Marketing Coaching has worked across multiple industries in Kenya and beyond, empowering businesses, startups, and C-suite leadership teams to align brand business objectives and customer needs through effective marketing strategy and impactful brand storytelling.

Kendi’s professional journey began over 23 years ago after graduating from the University of Nairobi, when she joined Unilever East Africa Ltd as a graduate trainee in field sales and brand management. It was here that she developed a foundational belief that continues to define her work today: that the most commercially resilient and sustainable businesses are built on strong, well-managed brands.

Her passion for building home-grown sustainable African brands was ignited during her tenure at East African Breweries Limited (EABL), where she served as Brand Manager & Marketing Manager for Tusker. During this period, she played a key role in driving consistent business growth driven by connecting with customers in East Africa through culture, sports and music. Notably Tusker Project Fame, which went on to become one of the most successful and widely loved branded cultural experiences in East Africa. Her responsibilities later expanded to Head of Spirits within the Diageo portfolio, where she refined her expertise in storytelling, brand experience driving local relevance and connection with global brands like Johnnie Walker, while repositioning local brands like Richot Brandy. “Brand Storytelling isn’t only about persuasion; it is about participation—inviting consumers to see themselves reflected in the brand narrative. It is about brands that root themselves in local pride, celebration, and progress becoming cultural symbols rather than just products”

Her passion for impactful brand storytelling was further shaped during her return to Unilever in roles spanning Southern and West Africa, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire. Working across diverse markets while building the Blue Band brand gave her a critical insight: that across Africa, the similarities in consumer values, optimism, resilience, and aspiration are far greater than the differences. When brand narratives were tightly linked to everyday consumer realities—health, family, dignity, aspiration, they didn’t just grow market share; they earned trust. Internally, this clarity of story aligned teams across functions, creating faster decision-making and stronger execution.

She later joined Safaricom as Head of Brand and Marketing Communications, where she led several high-impact integrated campaigns, including the brand repositioning from Twaweza to For You, and iconic thematic campaigns such as Nawe Kila, Wakati, Twende Tukiuke, and Tuinuane. Her leadership also delivered strong product marketing results across consumer, financial services, and enterprise segments. Whether through financial inclusion narratives, youth empowerment, or innovation, she led the brand storytelling and translated abstract technology into human impact. This built emotional connection at mass scale—turning customers into advocates. That alignment translated directly into market leadership and resilience.

Kendi went on to serve as Chief Marketing Officer at Absa, where she was part of a Pan-African leadership team that repositioned the brand from Africanacity to Your Story Matters.  Storytelling playing a critical role in repositioning the brand from a transactional institution to a partner in progress.

“Storytelling isn’t emotional for emotion’s sake; it was structured, intentional, and anchored in action”

Beyond corporate leadership, Kendi has been an active contributor to the marketing and creative industry. She has served on the board of the Marketing Society of Kenya, participated in regional (Loeries) and global (WARC) creative juries, and continues to advocate for creativity and effectiveness as core drivers of business performance in African markets.

Through her work at CK Marketing, Kendi has observed a persistent gap in the industry: businesses struggle to translate brand intent into growth, while marketing professionals often lack practical, context-relevant tools to succeed in increasingly complex markets. It is this gap that led to the development of the Brand Brilliance Framework, a structured approach designed to bridge the divide between brands and consumers, and between strategy and execution. The framework equips organizations to align purpose, positioning, go-to-market strategies, and communication in ways that influence perception, shape behaviour, and ultimately drive sustainable revenue growth. It also provides marketing professionals with the tools and thinking required to thrive not merely survive in the industry.

The Brand Brilliance Framework underpins an integrated ecosystem that includes

  •  Brand Brilliance Framework Book
  • Brand Brilliance Formula – Online Self-Paced Course
  • Brand Brilliance Bootcamp – Online Guided Coaching Programme

Kendi feels most aligned when she is creating spaces where people are learning and building bridges and connections. She believes that when organizations truly understand what their customers need both functionally and emotionally they are better positioned to influence behaviour, build trust, and grow with intention.
