Currently serving as Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom PLC, Fawzia’s leadership journey reflects a rare blend of commercial rigour, strategic vision, and an unwavering commitment to digital inclusion. Her work spans strategy execution, product development, revenue management, partnerships, distribution, segment marketing, corporate social responsibility, and integrated communications—each discipline reinforcing her holistic approach to business leadership.

Her story is a career anchored in excellence. She describes herself as a commercial leader and business development expert, known for delivering real-time results even in moments of crisis or cultural complexity. Her strength lies in mobilizing teams, aligning strategy with execution, and identifying opportunities where others see constraints. As a top C-level influencer, she brings a visionary mindset that enables Safaricom PLC to navigate disruption while improving operational efficiency.
At Safaricom PLC, her tenure has been marked by some of the company’s most impactful consumer-focused initiatives. Among her proudest achievements is accelerating the growth of the mobile data category and leading the launch of the MySafaricom App, which achieved five million downloads in its first year. She has also been central to digitizing customers by enabling access to 4G devices through Lipa Mdogo Mdogo, reinforcing the link between affordability and digital participation.
Her leadership has further extended to revamping the Bonga loyalty programme, strengthening customer engagement through value-driven rewards, and supporting the launch of Baze Video and Baze Music platforms through strategic partnerships. Across these initiatives, Safaricom PLC has maintained market leadership across its product portfolios—an outcome rooted in customer insight and disciplined execution.
Building Customer-Centric Organisations
Before her current role, Fawzia served as Mobile Data Tribe Lead, where she spearheaded pricing transformation for mobile data and championed seamless digital customer journeys. Her focus on bespoke, one-to-one offers and loyalty-driven propositions reflected a deep understanding of customer behaviour and data-led decision-making. She has immensely contributed to building Safaricom PLC as a customer-centric company.

Earlier, as Head of Regional Operations for the Coast Region, she led the execution of Safaricom’s business strategy at scale, overseeing brand performance, customer experience, and operational excellence. Accountable for a team of more than 200 people, she emphasized leadership that empowers managers, strengthens systems, and consistently delivers high Net Promoter Scores through efficient, customer-focused processes. She ensured value was created by ensuring that strategy, technology and people work together.
Her grounding in financial discipline continues to inform her leadership style—one that balances growth ambition with governance, data integrity, and long-term sustainability.
Academically, Fawzia holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Finance from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agriculture, Food Science and Technology from the University of Nairobi, where she graduated with First Class Honours. She is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Beyond executive responsibilities, Fawzia has contributed extensively to social impact through board and trustee roles. She served as Trustee and Chair of the Finance Committee at the Safaricom Foundation and as Director and Chair of the Finance Committee at Moving the Goalposts, supporting initiatives focused on community development, youth, women, and the girl child, all efforts beyond the corporate role.

A coach, mentor, writer, and mother, she continues to advocate for leadership that prioritizes continuity, people development, and institutional strength. Her reflections on succession planning, shared through her contribution to Marketing Africa, reinforce her belief that sustainable organisations are built on foresight rather than dependency. “The strongest organisations plan for continuity, not dependency,’’ she adds.
