JOSEPHINE NJOROGE
CFO – DHL EXPRESS KENYA
From the quiet town of Nyeri to the bustling boardrooms of DHL Express, my journey in finance has been anything but ordinary. My name is Josephine Wambui Njoroge, and as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of DHL Express Kenya, I’ve cultivated a career that spans continents, industries, and cultures. At 38, I find myself reflecting on the steps that brought me here – each one shaped by a deep curiosity for numbers and a desire to solve the puzzles they present.
It all started at St. Teresa’s Girls Primary School, where my love for logic first took root. By the time I graduated from Alliance Girls High School in 2003, I knew I was destined for a future that revolved around numbers.
Pursuing a degree in Economics and Sociology at the University of Nairobi (UoN) felt like a natural choice, but I wasn’t content to stop there. I earned my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualifications in 2006, a credential that laid the foundation for my career in finance.
My first role as an audit trainee in Nairobi was more than just a job – it was a proving ground. I thrived on turning theory into practice, navigating the complexities of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs,) and learning the importance of precision in financial processes. The world of finance had much more to offer, and I was eager to explore it.
In 2010, I took a leap of faith and applied for DHL’s Global Management Traineeship program in Bonn, Germany. What followed was a whirlwind of international assignments that shaped both my professional and personal life. From managing projects in Cologne and San Jose, to setting up a Shared Service Centre in Mauritius for sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), I was constantly challenged to adapt, lead, and innovate. Every new location, every new team added a layer to my understanding of finance, and of people.
By 2018, I was ready for my next adventure: stepping into the role of CFO for DHL in Tanzania. It was here that I truly learned the value of collaboration between shared services and country teams. With a focus on driving growth and fostering strong relationships, I helped lead the business into new opportunities. When the chance came in 2021 to return to Kenya as CFO, I embraced it with open arms.
Today, my role goes beyond balancing the books. I spend much of my time engaging with our customers – both retail and corporate – to understand their evolving needs. For me, finance is not just about numbers on a spreadsheet; it’s about creating solutions that drive business success and build lasting relationships.
Outside of the office, I am always on a quest for balance and joy. Whether I’m diving into a good book, perfecting my golf swing, or enjoying a quiet moment of reflection at Mamlaka Church, I cherish the moments that bring me peace. I’ve also discovered a love for scuba diving, a hobby I picked up while working in Mauritius. Though my diving gear has been gathering a bit of dust lately, I’m always looking for the next adventure.
As I look to the future, I’m excited for the challenges and opportunities ahead. My journey in finance has taught me that success is not just about technical expertise – it’s about leading with integrity, building strong relationships, and staying passionate about what you do. Finance, for me, is not just a career – it’s a calling to solve problems, create value, and make a meaningful impact on the world.
