QATAR AIRWAYS

As a global airline responsible for transporting millions of people and goods across the world, Qatar Airways operates at the heart of an industry that has a significant impact on the environment and society. The airline industry has an inherent duty to ensure that while connecting people and economies, it also mitigates its environmental footprint, enhances customer and employee well-being, and maintains the highest ethical standards. Qatar Airways, a leading player in the aviation sector, has taken this responsibility seriously, embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into the core of its operations.

Qatar Airways has made substantial progress in reducing its environmental footprint, with a focus on investing in fuel-efficient aircraft and exploring sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The airline operates one of the youngest fleets in the world, composed of technologically advanced aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. This investment in the latest-generation planes not only improves fuel efficiency but also aligns with the airline’s ‘Customer First’ strategy, ensuring that passengers enjoy the benefits of quieter, cleaner, and more efficient flights.

In 2023/24, Qatar Airways achieved a 94.4 percent reduction in lifecycle emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels by using 3.9 million litres of neat SAF for its operations in Amsterdam. Looking ahead, the airline has committed to incorporating at least 10 percent SAF in its fuel consumption by 2030, reinforcing its dedication to a greener future. The airline’s focus on operational efficiency is further demonstrated through its fuel optimisation programs, which include advanced flight path management systems and collaboration with stakeholders to enhance ground and air operations.

Beyond fuel efficiency, Qatar Airways is actively reducing waste. Qatar Aircraft Catering Company (QACC) recycled over 3,000 tonnes of solid waste in 2023/24, turning waste into revenue and diverting it from landfills. The airline’s broader commitment to sustainability extends to Hamad International Airport, which has achieved a 4-Star Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) rating for its eco-friendly design, including projects like The ORCHARD, a key feature of the airport’s expansion.

At the heart of Qatar Airways’ social sustainability efforts is a commitment to enhancing the customer experience and supporting employee well-being. The airline has invested heavily in upgrading its services, such as introducing a new suite on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft and expanding its Oryx One in-flight entertainment platform, providing passengers with a more enjoyable and seamless journey. The launch of the Al Mourjan Business Lounge – The Garden at Hamad International Airport further exemplifies Qatar Airways’ focus on luxury, comfort, and customer satisfaction.

Qatar Airways also recognises the importance of digital engagement in today’s world. The airline has developed a robust digital ecosystem that enhances interactions between cabin crew and passengers, while its mobile app remains a popular tool for customer engagement. The ongoing digitalisation of its Privilege Club loyalty program underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to improving the customer journey through technological innovation.

The airline’s efforts are not limited to passengers – Qatar Airways also prioritises its employees through initiatives under its THRUST program, which enhances benefits like staff travel, insurance packages, and leave entitlements. Talent development is a key focus, with leadership programs like ‘Qatari Future Leaders’ and ‘Smooth Landings’ designed to nurture the next generation of aviation leaders.

Qatar Airways also fosters diversity and inclusion, having committed to IATA’s (International Air Transport Association) 25by2025 initiative to promote gender equity within the industry.

Qatar Airways has established itself as a leader in corporate governance, ensuring that its operations comply with global safety and ethical standards. The airline’s governance strategy is built on data-driven decision-making, with initiatives like ‘People Analytics’ enhancing talent management, and the use of data science in flight operations to improve disruption management and operational efficiency.

Safety remains a top priority for Qatar Airways, as demonstrated by its impressive on-time performance rate of 86.4 percent in 2023, ranking it third globally for arrival punctuality. The airline also maintains stringent compliance and risk management practices, reflected in Qatar Airways Cargo’s achievement of all IATA CEIV (Center of Excellence for Independent Validators) certifications, covering Fresh, Lithium Batteries, Live Animals, and Pharma. The ground handling service, Qatar Aviation Services (QAS), also holds ISAGO (IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations) certification and CEIV certifications, ensuring safety and compliance across all operational areas.

Additionally, Qatar Airways’ investment portfolio aligns with the country’s broader vision for sustainability. Through strategic investments in leading global airlines such as IAG, LATAM, and Cathay Pacific, the airline is strengthening its position in the industry while ensuring that these investments support sustainable development.

Recognised globally for its commitment to excellence with a strong focus on innovation, responsibility, and forward-thinking leadership, Qatar Airways is poised to continue its journey as a trailblazer in the aviation industry.
