KARANJA NDEGWA – CEO & MD, JAMBOJET
In the dynamic world of regional aviation, a clear vision, a steady hand, and a dedicated team, are essential for success. For Jambojet, the leading regional low-cost carrier, the team leader is Karanja Ndegwa, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. Under his leadership, the airline has not only navigated the headwinds of a post-COVID-19 pandemic environment, but has solidified its position as a key player in East African aviation and a crucial facilitator of the region’s economic integration.
Ndegwa’s leadership philosophy is fundamentally anchored on transcending existing geographic, operational, and conceptual limitations with the ultimate goal of creating bridges across the region, fostering greater connectivity and collaboration. And this philosophy has been the core operational and strategic engine driving Jambojet’s remarkable trajectory of expansion and growth.

When Jambojet took to the skies over a decade ago, the management team was on mission to democratize air travel: that is making it reliable, accessible and affordable. 11 years later, Jambojet has expanded to 10 routes, flown over 9 million passengers, curved over 53% of market share. And spot-on to the main founding objective, 44% of Jambojet passengers are first time flyers, realizing their mission and dream, to open up the skies for all.
Karanja Ndegwa took on the role of Managing Director and CEO in 2020, right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, following his sterling service as Jambojet’s founding Chief Financial Officer. It was a baptism of fire: Faced with scaled down operations, Ndegwa, in collaboration with his leadership team, focused his strategy on cost management, consolidating existing routes, diversifying revenue streams, establishing new routes for growth and above all, focusing on customer centric solutions.
Jambojet’s primary base is Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), from which it serves seven domestic destinations; Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Diani, Lamu, and Malindi.
The airline also maintains a secondary hub in Mombasa, operating routes to Eldoret, Kisumu, and Zanzibar. In terms of regional operations, Jambojet previously operated four weekly flights to Goma (Eastern DRC) before the onset of civil unrest. Furthermore, pre-COVID-19, the airline flew to Kigali and Entebbe, with plans underway to restart services to these regional cities in the near future.

Jambojet achieved robust growth in 2025, marked by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13% increase in total passenger numbers. This surge drove an impressive 16% CAGR rise in revenue. The remarkable performance underscores the airline’s growing market appeal and operational efficiency, positioning it strongly to surpass the 2024 profitability numbers and solidify its standing as a financially healthy and growing East African low-cost carrier, a force to reckon with in the East African regional skies.
The driver of this success has been the collective effort of the Jambojet team, guided by Ndegwa’s unwavering focus on the customer, ensuring the customer experience is the priority in all decisions – from pricing and route development to service and digital interactions. This approach continuously simplifies the travel process, offers greater value, and proactively responds to passenger needs. For instance, Jambojet recently launched its ‘More Than a Journey’ campaign, highlighting that the airline doesn’t just fly passengers from one point to another, but is an active, supportive part of their journey, adding small, meaningful touches and connecting them to the moments that truly matter.

Jambojet’s global recognition is a strong indicator of its dedication to customer service, operational excellence, and reliability. This is evidenced by multiple accolades, including being named the World Travel Awards Africa’s Leading Low-Cost Airline for the fourth year in a row. Furthermore, the airline has been recognized by the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) for the Best improved financial results for the year 2024, and by the Kenya Travel Industry Business Awards (KeTIBA).
Despite Jambojet’s strong performance, the aviation sector presents ongoing challenges, particularly concerning the supply chain for essential aircraft components, which directly affects both aircraft availability and maintenance schedules. Despite these challenges, a continuous focus for Ndegwa is the expansion of flight frequencies on current routes. However, this growth is contingent upon acquiring new aircraft, not a mean feat.
In response to regional capacity demands, Jambojet this year successfully onboarded two additional aircraft.
Looking ahead, Ndegwa’s vision for Jambojet is a strategic regional expansion, solidifying its status as the model airline for affordable, accessible, reliable air travel. This strategy is built upon three core pillars: pursuing routes in unserved or underserved markets; enhancing operational excellence and reliability through technology and investment in the maintenance organization and people; and deepening connection with the customer through meaningful experiences and customer-centric solutions.
With a clear flight path focused on growth, efficiency, the customer, and a highly dedicated team, Jambojet is setting the standard for the future of regional aviation.
