BONIFACE MUNGANIA
ACTING CHIEF FINANCIAL SERVICES OFFICER
SAFARICOM PLC
From Digital Transformation to the Next Chapter of Financial Services
Boniface Gitonga Mungania’s career at Safaricom PLC offers an unusually close view of how Kenya’s digital economy has evolved. He joined the telecommunications company in 2007 in a customer-facing position. Nearly two decades later, he is back at the centre of one of Safaricom’s most consequential businesses, serving as Acting Chief Financial Services Officer.
For Mungania, the development is more than a change of title. It represents a return to an area of the business in which he has spent much of his career and where his experience extends from product development and payments to commercial partnerships and digital transformation.
His Safaricom journey began in 2007 as a Customer Care Representative. He subsequently became a Dealer Account Manager before moving into financial services in 2011 as an M-PESA Business Development Officer. From there, his responsibilities expanded through positions including Senior Manager, M-PESA Business Development; Mobile Financial Services Consultant at Vodafone Qatar; Head of M-PESA Products and Services Development; and, later, Payments Tribe Lead.

That progression is significant because it mirrors the transformation of M-PESA itself. What began principally as a mobile money service has developed into a broader digital financial-services ecosystem encompassing payments, credit, savings, investment and business solutions.
Mungania’s professional experience has consequently been built around a business whose competitive environment has become increasingly sophisticated. In October 2021, he became Payments Tribe Lead. The following year, he was appointed Acting Chief Financial Services Officer, a position he held from July 2022 until the appointment of Esther Masese Waititu in early 2023. During that period, Safaricom credited his leadership of the financial-services team with progress on strategic initiatives, including the launch of M-PESA Go and support for the government’s Hustler Fund.
Rather than remaining exclusively within financial services, however, Mungania subsequently moved into another strategically important part of Safaricom’s business. From April 2023, he became Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation. The mandate involved developing partnerships with national and county governments and identifying opportunities where technology could improve the delivery of public services. Safaricom also indicated that the role required collaboration across enterprise, financial services, technology and business-development teams.

This experience adds another dimension to his return to financial services. Public-sector digitisation requires an understanding of platforms, payments, institutional partnerships, customer journeys and the practical challenges of moving services from conventional processes into digital environments. These are increasingly relevant considerations for financial-services businesses as well. His career also illustrates the value of internal progression. Mungania did not arrive at the senior executive level through a single specialist track. His experience has included customer service, dealer management, business development, product management, payments, financial services and public-sector digital transformation. That breadth has given him exposure to different parts of the commercial chain—from the customer and merchant interface to product development and institutional partnerships.
His academic background has complemented that practical experience. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He holds additional certifications in project management and marketing, alongside further digital-business learning.
The significance of his current assignment extends beyond individual career progression. Safaricom’s financial-services business occupies a central position in the company’s wider technology strategy, and its future development depends on maintaining the reliability of established services while creating room for new products and business models. For Mungania, the immediate challenge is consequently one of continuity and transition. He is returning to a business he knows well, but one that has changed substantially since his first spell as Acting Chief Financial Services Officer in 2022. The financial-services landscape is now more competitive, more regulated and increasingly connected to digital platforms, developers, merchants, enterprises and consumers. His previous experience in payments and product development gives him direct familiarity with that environment. His subsequent work with government adds a broader understanding of how digital platforms operate within large institutions and public systems. That combination makes Mungania’s current role particularly relevant to the next phase of Safaricom’s evolution. His career has moved across the same boundaries that increasingly define the company itself: telecommunications, technology, payments, financial services and digital public infrastructure.

For an executive whose professional journey began at the customer-service desk, the return to the financial-services leadership table is a notable point in a career shaped by internal progression and changing technology. More importantly, it places him at an intersection where Safaricom’s original telecommunications business and its increasingly diverse digital-services portfolio continue to converge. His major task is not simply to manage an established financial-services operation. It is to help maintain momentum while the company determines the permanent leadership of the function—and to bring the experience acquired across nearly two decades of Safaricom PLC’s own transformation to a business that continues to redefine what a technology company can become.
Mungania also contributed to the conversation during the Central Bank of Kenya at 60 AI Conference, bringing the perspective of Safaricom PLC’s financial services, which operates within this evolving regulatory landscape, since AI is already changing how Safaricom’s services are delivered, from smarter customer experience and fraud prevention to predictive network capabilities and more intelligent decision-making.
Mungania was also honoured by the state with the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) for service to his country, Kenya.
